Why do people tithe-what is the biblical truth about tithing :
Malachi was written four hundred years before the beginning of the first church in Jerusalem.
There has been an ongoing argument for and against tithing for decades. The tithing has been mentioned 18 times in the Old Testament. The crust of the argument is why we should tithe when Jesus paid the price in full when he shed his blood and died on the cross taking our sins away.
While this debate has being going on for years, it should be pointed out that Lord Jesus did mention it in the New Testament even though sparingly. In short Jesus said though people give tithes they neglect other important things at the same time.( Luke 11 : 42 )
Why pay your tithes-
As it is mentioned in the old testament, in Malachi 3: 8-12
“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you ?
In tithes and offerings. You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me.
Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord
Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven
and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to
store it. I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your
fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. “
In Matthew 5 : 17, Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them “
And in Luke 6 : 38 “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Why tithes important-
In this scripture, God is pointing out how we rob God. In the old testament times one is required to give one tenth of everything you get, whether it be grain or money. It is imperative one should follow this law as the local church depends on these giving of tithes.
The Israelite s were not bringing their offerings, resulting from God allowing them with only a small harvest, for their disobedience. And he challenged them to bring a full tithing.
Modern day preachers-
Unfortunately, many modern day preachers has taken advantage of these scriptures and “push” people to give one tenth of all their earnings with the promise God will multiply the tithes. This is a sad situation as while it is true according to Malachi 3 : 10 in the Old testament, it is not a requirement in the New Testament. And I am aware some churches discourage people from attending churches if they fail to offer tithes.
Moreover, Evangelists, especially in the USA, preach Tithing most frequently, seems to be runninga business. While it is in the Bible that preachers are allowed to expect an allowance from the church for their needs it never mentioned that you could peddle the word of God for profit In fact it warns against such behavior.
The preaching of Tithes, was first started by Evangelist Oral Roberts and then followed by Kenneth Copeland and copied by many other evangelists. It has done more harm than good for Christianity. While these principles are correct and is in the bible, it does not say anywhere in the Bible that you are going to have an easy time as a Christian as it says “Satan is prowling like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour”
It is important to note, that in, 2 Corinthians 9: 7 the Bible says, “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
“God loves a cheerful giver”, therefore, do not place undue pressure thinking you must give tithes. When you financially insecure you are under pressure and will not be able to give one tenth.
And then the local pastor will say “you lack faith” which is unfair because as they say your faith maybe smaller than of a mustard seed. But I remember when I asked a well known evangelist for help in staying in college, what he said. He told me to “Ask God” so, I am saying the same thing, why not “ask God” if you really believe in miracles and not ask for donations from the poor.
And in Luke 6:38 it says, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken
together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”
Again God stresses the importance of giving and receiving. And you will receive so much that you will not be able to contain it. And also in Deuteronomy 15 :10 it says “Give generously to him and do so without a grudging heart; then because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you put your hand to.”
It stresses that you give happily and not grudgingly, for you to receive maximum blessings.
Conclusion- Jesus did not add special instructions on Tithing, but it is still a good practice to give even if not 10 percent, as it says ” Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
Also, it says, in Luke 6:30, “Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back.”
So, what of what do we have to be afraid of ? Lack of finances, Never as according to, Philippians 4:19 “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”
In fact I believe that Jesus did not stress the importance of tithing as He wanted assure all that despite what ever gifts, tithes that you may bestow upon the Lord, he will provide all your needs for you. Amen
