When I was 14 years old, I remember watching Charlton Heston as Moses on the big screen, descending from the mountain with two large tablets. And in it were the ten commandments. To this day, it is very alive in my memory.
The Ten Commandments-
- “You shall have no other gods before me.”
- “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of
anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or
that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or
serve them, for I the Lord your God and only worthy of worship, visiting
the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth
generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to
thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.”
- “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
- “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall
labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the
Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or
your daughter, or your servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who
is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day.
Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.”
- “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
- “You shall not murder.”
- “You shall not commit adultery.”
- “You shall not steal.”
- “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
- “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your
neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox,
or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
**Where did Moses get the ten commandments:
According to the Book of Exodus, Mount Sinai , is the mountain at which the Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God.
The Lord spoke to Moses face to face on top of the mount Sinai. And they were written in Hebrew. It was the Yahweh god who brought Israelis out of Egypt and out of bondage. They were written in two tablets of stone and inscribed with fire, Exodus 31:18 You may have seen it in the blockbuster movie “The Ten Commandments”
1. You shall have no other Gods before me- God says in Exodus 20:2 says,“I am Yahweh, your God who brought you up out of land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other Gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol, no any image of anything that is in heavens above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth “
Therefore, it is imperative that you forget whatever other things you may have been worshiping in the past and dedicate your life one hundred percent to our heavenly Father in heaven. And also father God, goes on to say, that he is a jealous God, and not to serve any other God and not bow down to them.
I myself was a Buddhist before I found the truth in Jesus. And as soon as I became a Christian, I stopped ever thinking about Buddha. And I have been diligent since then. It is important that you give our God the first place in life in everything. Do not idolize people of any kind. Ensure your mind is set on serving God.
Do not worship any idols, they can come in the form of singers, football stars, Tennis champions and even highly paid baseball and basketball players. Remember all of them were created by God and the talents were as well.
The Beatle, John Lennon said in a 1966 interview that he is “More popular than Jesus” and that Christianity would end before rock music does. None of that happened.
2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything other.–
God warns about people who make idols of any kind. Some children especially, worship pendants inclusive of elephant hair, thinking it will bring prosperity. Or they think wearing nose rings and rings of all kind make them important and worship them. All they are doing is making our Lord angrier. As stated above our God is a jealous god, and do not want you to worship anything and give prominence to them. Some are playing with witch craft not knowing the harm it brings with it. And some abuse prescription drugs, hoping to get a high rather than seeking a spiritual high.
3.“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.”
How many times you hear, mostly non Christians utter the word “Jesus” or even worse “Jeez” This is a blatant insult to our most high God. I cringe when I hear it. They do not know the consequence they could face using our god’s name in vain. It sounds as if they are making mockery of the name. This should not be so. Unfortunately, many of them are not saved and do not realize the punishment awaiting them, but it is also possible that Jesus could forgive them as they are not saved. Therefore, I believe the punishment would be greater for Christians who still use the name Jesus in vain as a curse word.
4.“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, …”
For in six days our God made heavens, earth and the sea and all in them. Then he rested on the seventh day. The Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it Holy.
Jews celebrate Sabbath (shabbat) from Friday evening to Saturday night. Christians celebrate Sabbath on Sunday to remember resurrection of Jesus. It is a Holy day and the word holiday is derived from it. And on this day the Lord requires you, your family servants do not work.
Unfortunately, today we are being directed by our employers to work on Sundays. You must do your best to avoid working on Sundays even if it meant you losing your job. Who do you want to listen to your boss or our lord.
By resting on the seventh day, you honor God. In early day disobedience to keep sabbath holy was punishable by death.
5.“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.”
In essence in the ancient days if you strike or curse your parents it was punishable by death. That is why it says “that your days maybe long” And honoring parents was akin to honoring God.
Today, the present generation, hardly respect their parents which in itself is a tragedy. They do not remember or understand the hardships they go through in bringing them up. Protecting them, financing school education and nourishing them. Unfortunately, when they grow older parents are being sent to various retirement centers and neglected.
6. “You shall not murder.”
You must not murder anyone. The punishment was death by hanging. Only exception to this rule were, when killing a home intruder, in warfare. The Bible praises victories over enemies, especially by King David’s army.
Today, you find many murderers roaming the streets of cities of America. And it is a tragedy as even in Christian states especially along the Bible belt, there are murders occurring frequently. Even in small city like Tulsa more than fifty murders a year.
7. “You shall not commit adultery “
In the Old testament times, adultery was considered a capital crime. Even though multiple wives were allowed at that time, only if one had sexual relations of anyone outside marriage was considered adultery. The punishment for adultery was the death penalty.
Nowadays, it is the norm to have sexual relations outside marriage. This has resulted in spread of venereal disease. And new diseases like HIV, which has killed millions and still do. It is amazing that many, even school kids having unprotected sex despite all these stats showing large number of victims of social diseases.
8.“You shall not steal “
Many people were involved in kidnapping including Human trafficking. And were punished by death. And if someone stole because he was hungry, he was required to pay ten times more. But if the thief confesses his sin and return the property he would be forgiven.
How many thieves today steal but yet do not repent. And many get away stealing, even politicians has resorted to stealing But they would certainly face the wrath of God for their deeds as it was the poor workers who pay taxes, working hard. When you see someone prosper you steal their joy by doing everything possible by making him unhappy, this is also a form of stealing.
9.“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor “
Lying was detested by God.especially lying under oath which is perjury. If you give false testimony in a capital crime case, the punishment was death. Though judges are more lenient nowadays in a false testimony. Many testified falsely against Jesus. And all were proven wrong.
10.“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Do not lust over your neighbors wife, silver or gold. In short do not lust after anything that belongs to your neighbor, be it their property, houses anything that belongs to your neighbor.
Many today, lust after the neighbor’s car, houses wife, daughters and cloth. And try to steal what others have. These are abdominal in god’s sight.
God brought the Ten Commandments to teach people how to live a godly life as it was intended to be from the beginning. And those who followed them lived happily and prosperous. And many who disobeyed then and now end up in disaster. Therefore, ensure that you live a Holy Life abiding the Ten Commandments.
