How is money the root of all evil-Is that true is money the root of all evil, Many people say money is root of all evil, so today I will discus how that can be.
As explained in the Bible verse money is root of all evil :

1 Timothy 6:10 “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”

Even though people think that money is the root of all evil, actually it is the Love of money, the root of all evil, not money itself. There is nothing wrong with having money. From Genesis, on wards the bible speaks about money. Money has been there for centuries and people were dealing with gold and silver as currency.

So, why are people eager for money, to be rich. It is because of the goods they can buy, and comfortable life they can live, luxuries they can afford to buy. Ability to buy property, gifts of gold, diamonds for their loved ones.

Ecclesiastes 5:10 “Whoever loves money never has enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. This too is meaningless.”

Working hard for money:

Exactly, everyone wants to be rich, go on a shopping spree. There are many who almost die, working overtime for more money. There is no reason why one should ignore his family, not eat properly, not exercise, no sleep or no family life should die of a heart attack, trying to earn money. Absolutely ridiculous.

Some gets up early morning, before sunrise and go to deliver paper, make food in the restaurant for day’s business. While it is true that you have to make living, there is no need to “kill” yourself in doing so. As apostle Matthew says in,

Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”

You have to chose one over the other. In this case, one should chose most powerful, omnipresent all mighty God as opposed to money. And if you do, your life would be prosperous and fruitful.

Many consider one is blessed by measuring him by the wealth he has. How much money he has in the bank. Is he driving a BMW, or is it a Lexus, Benz. This is all vanity.

One should look at the inner man than the outward false appearance of a man. One can look like a saint but could be a murderer, adulterer and worse a child rapist. And driving the most luxurious car.

Teaching children:

It is good to warn your children about the kind of evil in this world. They should be made aware of different characters you may face in your daily life, caution them against speaking to strangers. This is of ultra importance if you are to survive in this evil world. A stranger may come to them in a luxury car and offer them with gifts and try to entice them with gifts. Warn them ! Should never go near a stranger.

Worship money:

Why people worship money, I do not understand. One is never happy with what God has given him. May be that is why Hebrews 13:5 say “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” God has given you enough to be content, food on the table, roof over the head, sufficient income though not rich yet. God says be content with what you have. Be happy with what you got. As it says in Proverbs 15:16 “Better a little with the fear of the Lord than great wealth with turmoil.”

The real blessings of the Lord are brought without problems and heartaches.

Proverbs 10:22 “The blessings of the Lord brings wealth, without painful toil for it ”

Do not put your hope in wealth :

God promises, provide us everything, so why worry, toiling for that dollar. It is better to put your hope in God than in money. Jesus said in 1 Timothy 6:17 “Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.”

Better the little you have :

You maybe live in a little hut, in Africa, no lights but lanterns. No food, have to go hunting for food, not sure of your daily meal. Many wicked people get rich by unlawful means. And nobody knows how they made their money. Some get rich by peddling drugs. Some in prostitution. Some in fraudulent ways.

Psalm 37:16-17 “Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous”

Strive for a good name:

Proverbs 22:1 “A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” It is imperative that you keep a good name always. Never get enticed by get-rich-quick schemes. While there are legitimate programs to make money, most of them are frauds.

Whatever money you make, do it in a legal, righteousness way. Then your Lord, God will bless you as he says ,

in Proverbs 16:8 “Better a little with righteousness than much gained with injustice”

Moreover, when god gives someone gifts and money He enables them to enjoy without any hindrances. Ecclesiastes 5:19 “Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God ” We have a loving God who will reward someone for his good deeds, he ensures that he is able to enjoy them without hindrances.

Pray for others:

I would like to bring your attention that even though Job lost all his possession and went through so many hardships, he Never cursed God or give up on him. And finally in the end God rewarded him and was given Twice s much as he had before.

Job 42:10 “After Job had prayed for his friends, the Lord restored his fortunes and gave him twice as much as he had before”

Everyone need money to live and it is not Money itself that is wrong, but “Love of money” ; as it says you can not serve both God and money, it has to be one or the other. Everyone needs money to live. but do not worship it.

  1. Thanks for writing this! I appreciate the way you used the literal words of Scripture to point out what it’s actually saying, as opposed to how many people choose to interpret it.

I think that working hard, growing in wealth, and even experiencing prosperity are all things that God is okay with, as the prayer of Jabez from 1 Chronicles exhibited for us, it’s even okay to express your hope of this to God, but ultimately God’s plan is best, and He knows our hearts. I’m content with what he’s providing me, but I’m also working hard. I think these are good things.

You also make a great point that cherishing our time to spend it with God, with our families, with others, is healthier than to burn all of our time pursuing our own gain, apart from God’s Will.

    1. Thanks Jordan. I just like to point out it also says in the scripture, that “you can not serve both money and God” So while it is required to earn a living to care for yourself and family, you must not neglect to serve God at the same time.

  2. Not everyone is blessed to be capable of properly managing the money and other assets that we have been blessed with. I highly encourage people to learn how to manage money in accordance with God’s will.

It takes money to build and staff hospitals, churches, to provide homes and food. Those that are blessed with money are expected to look out for the poor.

Yet intentionally staying broke, for fear that money is the root of all evil, will not honor God or allow you to help others in need. It is simply being irresponsible.

    Just my thoughts…..
